We have had a great time in science this week, learning all about the work of the famous paleontologist Mary Anning.
Our research showed us that Mary spent her childhood exploring the Jurassic coast and as a result found many fossils which taught her (and now us) about the lives of a variety of different species. Ask us all about the icthyosaur!
Week commencing 31st March 2025!
This week in Year 6, it’s been all about assessments and preparing for SATs. We know it’s not always easy, but we’ve been so impressed with the effort, focus, and determination shown by everyone in 6WB. You’ve tackled each paper with maturity and resilience, and we’re proud of the way you’ve stayed motivated throughout the week.
A big well done to those of you who have also been attending booster sessions — your commitment to your learning has not gone unnoticed, and it’s great to see so many of you pushing yourselves to do your very best.
We know assessments can be challenging, but your positive attitudes and tenacity have really shone through. Keep going, 6WB — you’re doing an amazing job!

How many adverts do you think you have watched in your lifetime? Can you remember what you liked/disliked? Can you recall what they sold? These are just some of the questions that we have explored this week as we talked about what makes critical consumers. We enjoyed watching a variety of adverts and then discussed the different techniques that advertisers and companies use, in order to persuade us to buy their products.
Our favourites involved a shopkeeper giving a unicorn as change and policeman speaking in high pitched voices and eating sweets.....can you guess which adverts they are?
Week commencing 10th March 2025!
This week we have enjoyed taking part in British Science Week, where we have combined our learning about Antarctica with a scientific investigation. Using ice and pebbles, we created a representation of the rocks and glaciers and then explored how long it took for the ice to melt at room temperature and then in cold water. We took our learning even further by adding salt to the water, to see what difference it made to the results we received. Quickly, we were able to link our findings to the melting of Antarctica and climate change - with a fascinating question and answer session!

Week commencing 3rd March 2025!
This week, in science, we had a fabulous time as we all became ducks. We have been learning all about adaptations and how animals have evolved to be able to survive. We explored this through the creation of lots of different islands and uses tools to represent different types of beaks. It was most frustrating to be 'Pecky Duck' (this was a cocktail stick) as there wasn't much this duck could collect!

Week commencing 10th February 2025!
Science has been absolutely spectacular this week! We have explored the world of shadows, from how they are formed and why, to how they change shape.
We carried out an amazing experiment where we used multi link and torches to see if whether the distance a light source is from an object, effects the length of the shadow. Why not ask us what we found out?
Week commencing 3rd February 2025!
Year 6 have had an absolutely cracking assessment week. They have worked super hard and impressed us with their resilience and determination. Some children have even managed to improve their result by a significant amount. We are so proud! They will be bringing their assessments home this week and next, so please do sit and look through them with your children. Next week, we have our SATs workshop which will go through some of the sort of questions that they face so please attend if you can.
In English this week we have begun our newspaper report on Pig Heart Boy. If you can, try and look at some newspapers over the weekend to help your child learn some more of the journalistic language involved.
Year 6 have all made us extremely proud of them!
Week commencing 27th January 2025!
In PSHE this week, we discussed the concept of altered images. After watching a video (which Mrs Wilson has linked below) we talked about why images are altered online and the impact that this might have not only on the individual that posts it, but also on those that see it. Following our discussions we wrote some reflective pieces about our thoughts on altered images.

Week commencing 20th January 2025!
In science this week, we learnt all about how light travels and as a result, explored the periscope. We found out that this works through mirrors being placed at an angle, which then reflect the light and help us see what is above us. To culminate our lesson, we had a go at making periscopes of own!
Week commencing 13th January 2025!
This week we have started thinking about the future of the world in which we live. We looked at statistics which showed us the way in which stereotypes are in action in the world around us. We were surprised to learn that there are less women than men in STEM employment and this started a very interesting conversation about why this might be.
To complete this lesson, we wrote manifestos as the Prime Minister and thought about changes we would make to the world and our local communities, to ensure that things were more fair.
Week commencing 6th January 2025!
This week we have explored our new history topic of the Victorians. Using a variety of sources, we created a timeline of the monarch's life, thinking about the significant events which took place. Following the timeline, we then thought about the impact that the Queen had on Britain and the British Empire.

We have had a fantastic week in 6WB and are certainly ready for the Christmas break. We have dashed with Santa, danced our socks off at a Christmas disco and had an excellent afternoon of games and fun!
We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back in January, after a good rest, for plenty of hard work....and of course, some fun!
Week commencing 9th December 2024!
This week we have been thinking about the future!
We were delighted to be part of a discussion with member of staff from Ford. The gentlemen we met with were planners for cars of the future and discussed electric cars with us and the advantages and disadvantages of them.
During a question and answer session, we were able to think about why electric cars are so popular and ask questions about what they might look like by the time we are able to drive!
As part of our follow up lesson, we created a piece of writing which compared electric cars to their petrol and diesel counterparts.
Thank you to James and Johan at Ford for your time - we learnt an awful lot!
Week commencing 2nd December 2024!
It has been a very busy, yet successful week for 6WB. The children all did incredibly well for our assessment week; it has been wonderful to see just how confident they are becoming. Some of our children even took part in a swimming gala too! In English, the children have been writing a balanced discussion about a variety if things from wearing uniform to using smartphones. Well done to each and everyone of the children for their fabulous attitudes this week.

Week commencing 18th November 2024!
In English lessons this week, we have learnt all about our amazing eyes! We spent time researching the parts of our eyes, how we see things, how we protect our eyes and finally learnt about tricks that our eyes play on us through optical illusions!
After learning many fascinating new facts, we turned our attention to writing non chronological reports. See some of our efforts below.

Week commencing 11th November 2024!
This week, we explored our new topic - the country of Mexico. We used maps to find where Mexico is located on a world map and then used our reading skills to decipher the features of the country. To consolidate our learning, we wrote a paragraph explaining what we had found out.
Week commencing 4th November 2024!
This week in 6WB, we have become poets! Inspired by the story 'The Day the Crayons Quit' we thought about inanimate objects and turned them into objects with feelings. Have you ever wondered how a yellow board pen feels? An un-sharpened pencil? Or what about a gravestone? Read some of our work to find more.

Week commencing 14th October 2024!
This week we have been thinking about Peace in R.E and how it is important to everyone, not matter what their religion.
We celebrated the subject through poetry and thought about what peace meant to each of us. Here is a display which we have created to share our wonderful poetry with the rest of the school community.

Week commencing 7th October 2024!
This week in 6WB, we have thought about how to keep our hearts healthy, as part of our science work. We discussed the different ways in which we can keep our hearts healthy, such as through a balanced diet and the inclusion of exercise in our daily lives. To demonstrate our learning, we produced double page spreads which shared our most important information. Have a look at the photos below to see if you agree with our thinking.

Week commencing 30th September 2024!
This week on English, we have focussed on the life of the famous diarist, Anne Frank. We have learnt about what happened to her and her family during World War Two and then used what we have learnt, combined with our English skills, to write a biography of her life.
Have a read of some excerpts from our writing below:

This week, year 6 have travelled back to the Tudor times, to learn all about another Tufor monarch. Through sources, we explored the life and reign of Mary Tudor and asked ourselves the question - was she bloody or simply misunderstood? Why not ask us more about her life, crimes and achievements?
Week commencing 16th September 2024!
Another fantastic week of learning! The Year 6 classes have been busy making blood using marshmallows, sprinkles, strawberry laces and oil. They then wrote a non-chronological report about plasma, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells. In history, the children have been learning about Henry VIII and his wives. Was he a horrible King? We used discussion and primary source material to be able to analyse the impact of his six wives.
We had a very successful meet and greet - thank you to everyone who came.
Week commencing 9th September 2024!
Year 6 have been super busy this week. They have worked really hard to create two beautiful pieces of writing about a woman who has to leave her husband and fight in the army. In history, they have thoroughly enjoyed writing about Henry VIII and his wives. I have been thoroughly impressed by their subject knowledge! Additionally in science this week, the children have done a fantastic job of creating a heart diagram along with a detailed explanation of its function in the circulatory system. Great work 6CE!
Week commencing 2nd September 2024!
This week has been a fantastic start to year 6!
We have learnt all about the circulatory system in science, started (and completed!) our first piece of English writing and had a fabulous time learning all about the Battle of Bosworth in history. (see our reenactment photo) Do you know the tale of the War of the Roses? Do you know how long your circulatory system is? Speak to someone in our class to find out more!
