Week commencing 22nd July 2024!
Year 1 have had a great last week. They have written fantastic introduction letters to their new teachers. They have also created a fantasy holiday island. They have fitted in a party or two and enjoyed a pizza for being the class with the highest attendance this year.
I am so proud of every one in 1JV and wish you all a wonderful safe summer break and continued success in year 2.
Week commencing 15th July 2024!
Year 1 have had a great week. In English they have written their story ‘Bubbles’ which was based on an animation and I have been very impressed with the progress they have made this year. In maths they have been practising the 4 operations and solving problems. In RE they have been reviewing what they have learnt about different religions. In PSHE year 1 have looked back at what they have achieved this year and in DT they have evaluated the smoothie making activity.

1JV have had a great week.
They have worked very hard in their assessments and showed how far they have progressed this year. In English they have been learning the animated story of ‘Bubbles’ and drawn fantastic story maps. In science they have drawn a deciduous tree for each season showing the changes that happen. In PSHE they have continued looking at internet safety and talked about trusted adults that they could ask for help. In DT they have made delicious fruit smoothies and designed packaging for them.

Week Commencing 1st July 2024
Year 1 have had another great week. They have innovated the rhyming story of ‘Mr Magnolia’ in English. In Maths, they have practised a range to topics to help their number knowledge. In RE, they retold a story from the bible. In PSHE, they made posters explaining how and why we need to keep safe online. Geography was looking at an English seaside resort and deciding if the features were human or physical features. Finally, they tasted different fruits and vegetables in DT in readiness for making smoothies next week.

Week Commencing 24th June 2024
1JV have had a great week. In English, they have been learning the rhyming story of ‘Mr Magnolia’ and found lots of rhyming words ready to write a new version next week. In maths, they have been practising multiplication using repeated addition and arrays and division using the sharing method, In RE, they have looked at Ramadan and identified some objects that are special for Muslims. In PSHE, they have learned about age restrictions and why they are important to keep safe. In science, year 1 have completed the summer page of their seasons diary.

Week Commencing 17th June 2024
1JV have had another amazing week. In English. they have written the story of Rumpelstiltskin. In maths. they have explored money by first recognising coins and notes then adding and subtracting money amounts in a variety of worded problems. In geography. 1JV have identified the continents and oceans on a map. In PSHE. they have looked at why we have rules at home and how they keep us safe.
Everyone enjoyed our trip to Hyde Hall for our science plant topic and we were very lucky with the weather.

Week Commencing 10th June 2024
1JV have returned to school after the half term break eager to work and have had a great week.
In English they have been learning the story of Rumpelstiltskin. In maths they have practised addition and subtraction calculations. Science was exploring different types of trees around the school grounds. In PSHE they have looked at how they can manage their emotions if things go wrong. In RE they have looked how different objects and symbols can represent belonging to the Christian faith.

Week Commencing 20th May 2024
1JV have had a great week to end the half term. They have been writing ’The Slippery Tale’ story in English. In maths they have been creating data charts and answering questions about them. In science they have written a story about how a seed travels and the cycle it goes through. PSHE was talking about feelings and emotions and in RE they looked at features of a Christian wedding ceremony. To finish our Titanic topic, Year 1 designed commemorative medals.
Fantastic work 1JV. Have a restful holiday to prepare for our last half term in year 1.
Week Commencing 13th May 2024
Another great week for 1JV.
They have been learning the animated story of, ‘The Slipper Tale,’ in English and have sequenced events from the story and written character descriptions for the frog. In Maths, they have all done really well in their assessments and I can see how far they have come since September. In PSHE, the children have written about how they are unique and in RE they have compared how new babies are welcomed in different religions.
In History, 1JV have sorted facts about the Titanic and the Windrush.

1JV have had a great week.
They have written dinosaur fact files in English. In Maths, they have used mental calculations to solve addition and subtraction questions. In PSHE, they explored how exercise effects their bodies. In science, they have looked at wildflowers and compared two different varieties. They also categorised some garden and wildflowers and did a flower hunt around the school grounds.

Year 1 have had another amazing week.
In English, they have started writing their non-chronological reports about Dinosaurs. In maths, they have practised multiplication and division. In RE, they have looked at the Muslim ceremony to welcome a baby and PSHE they have made fantastic sun safety posters.
Everyone enjoyed the science enrichment day of gardening. The children used fresh flowers to label a plant, they designed posters to help remind people not to step on the flowers and had lots of fun weeding, digging and planting more flowers and vegetables. They all worked really well. Great work 1JV.

In English, they have been writing the ‘The Way Back home’ story and used some fabulous vocabulary. In maths, they have been practising addition and subtraction. In Science, they have written instructions on how to plant seeds. In PSHE, they have explored healthy and unhealthy foods and in RE they have looked at a baptism ceremony,
In History, they have continued looking at the Titanic and the difference between the different class cabins. Then everyone designed posters advertising the Titanic maiden voyage.

Week Commencing 15th April 2024
I hope that everyone had a great two-week break.
1JV have come back to school ready to learn for the Summer term. This week, they have learnt a new story, in English, ‘The Way Back Home’ and written a setting description. In maths, they have been exploring fractions of shapes and of an amount of objects. In RE, they talked about belonging and about the groups that they belong to. IN PSHE, they started looking at being healthy which is our topic for the next half term. We started our new science topic of plants and have planted bean seeds. We also looked at the names of some flowers.

Week Commencing 25th March 2024
Year 1 have had another great week to end this term.
In English, they have written a recount about our school trip to the toy museum. In maths, they have been making tally charts, block charts and pictographs and interpreting the data. In science, they have spoken about Spring and completed the Spring part of their seasons diary. In RE, they have written about symbols of Easter and made a story map of the Easter story.
Everyone enjoyed taking part in the Easter Egg Hunt.

Week Commencing 18th March 2024
Year 1 have had another busy week. They have written their innovated ‘Three Bears’ story, in English. In maths they have been recapping what they have learnt in year 1 during our assessment week. In science they explored more about materials and in RE they wrote the Easter story.
Everyone has a fantastic day out at the toy museum on Thursday and a it was a lovely end for our ‘Toys from the Past topic.

1JV have had another fantastic week. It was great to meet with so many parents this week.
Year 1 have had an extremely busy week. In English they have been learning the ‘Three Bears’ story ready to write it next week. In maths they have been telling the time and following position and direction instructions. In science they made bridges and tested how many bricks the bridge could hold. In RE they made posters advertising the groups that might meet in the church and in PSHE they debated the importance of different jobs. In computing the children are making electronic books of the ‘Three Bears’ story.

1JV have had another amazing week.
They have written their version of ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’, in English. In maths they have been practising mental calculations. In they have looked at toys that their parents and grandparents may have played with. In RE they compared features of Christianity, Judaism and Islam religions. In science they have made boats to explore materials that float.

Year 1 have had a great first week back.
In 1JV the children have been reading and learning ‘ Lost in the Toy Museum’ book ready to write it next week. In maths they have been practising addition and subtraction and are making great progress. In science there was an investigation to find waterproof materials. In RE they explored the features of a Mosque and in PSHE they identified things they are good at.
On Tuesday the children enjoyed their visit from the tallest basketball player and actor and all took part in a basketball training session.

Week Commencing 5th February 2024
Another great week in 1JV.
The children have been really busy in English writing their ‘The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me’ stories. In maths they have been looking at place value and ordering numbers. For science they children made houses to find the most suitable material for ‘The Three Pigs’. They started looking at features of a mosque in RE and what the internet can be used for in PSHE. Finally in geography, on the enrichment day, they have made amazing 3d maps, explored atlases and devised a map of the school.

1JV have had a fantastic week.
Year 1 have been learning the story of ‘The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me’ ready to write it next week. In maths they have been practising the 4 operations. In science they did an experiment to find the most absorbent paper towel to clean up a spilled drink. In PSHE they looked at how the help to care for the environment and in RE the wrote about items that are special to Jewish people. Finally in geography they made great maps of the classroom.

1JV have had another great week.
In English they have innovated the ‘Three Little Pigs’ story and really improved their independence in writing. In Maths they have been practising mental methods of addition and subtraction.
Science was deciding which materials could be used to make different objects and in PSHE year 1 started looking at how we care for animals, plants and humans.

1JV have had another great week.
They have been learning the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ ready to write their innovated version next week. In maths they have started multiplying and dividing for the first time and made an amazing job of it. In science they sorted objects made of different materials by their properties and in RE year 1 wrote about their church visit last week. It was wonderful to see everyone celebrating the different cultures across the school.

1 JV have had a fantastic week.
They have written their innovated versions of the ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’, story in English. In Maths they were investigating measure – weight, length and capacity. To start our science topic we have started to explore different materials. For RE everyone enjoyed the trip to the church and learnt lots about the features of the building.

Welcome back to a new term. I hope that you all had a great break.
Although it has only been a short week 1JV have worked very hard. In English the children have learned the story of ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’ and drawn amazing story maps. They have sequenced numbers and explored place value in maths. In geography 1JV have started the new topic of ‘Our School’ and located Quarry Hill Academy on a map of Grays. In RE year 1 have sorted pictures of scared places and objects into different religions and in PSHE 1JV have written some extra new rules.

Week Commencing 18th December 2023
1JV have finished the term with a fantastic week. They have written about some strange reindeer visitors that came to year 1 at the weekend. In maths they have been using their arithmetic skills to solve puzzles. In PSHE they have made kindness baskets and filled their friend’s baskets with kind words. 1JV enjoyed the class parties and the Santa dash.

Year 1 have had another busy week. After their amazing performances in the Christmas play they have also written diary entries each day for what the mischievous elf has been up to. In science they explored how the trees are looking now in Winter. In Geography they have compared human features of landmarks in France to those in the UK. In Maths they have been learning how to read the time on a clock. They have done fantastically!!
Week Commencing 4th December 2023
Week 6 and year 1 have had a great week. They have been writing a diary about the mischief that the elf has been getting up to. In maths they have been recapping what we have been learning this year in assessments and in science writing their seasons diary.
Everyone has been practicing the Christmas songs. Finally in art the children painted their final piece using the paint techniques they heave been learning this year. They have painted some amazing pictures.

1JV have had another amazing week. They have written non-chronological reports about France in English. In maths they have been practising mental calculations and in science they have looked at similarities and differences in animal groups.
1JV enjoyed their French Enrichment day. They identified France and other European countries on a map, sang ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ in French, tasted lots of delicious French food and finished the day by looking at the French artists Cezanne, Matisse and Money and recreating their artwork.

1JV have had a busy week.
In English they have been researching facts about France and writing a non-chronological report. In maths they have explored measure and used rulers, balance scales and jugs to compare. In science year 1 have grouped animals according to if they are carnivores, omnivore, or herbivores.
In computing year 1 have used the paint program to recreate their interpretation of the artwork of Kandinsky. They all did a fantastic job.

1JV have had a great week.
They have written an innovated version of ‘Aargh Spider as ‘Aargh Ladybird’ and made a fantastic job of it. In maths they have practised addition and subtraction strategies. Following the animal topic this week in science the children looked at how animals moved and which group they belong to. RE continued talking about kindness. In geography the children explored the weather in France and made excellent weather charts.

Year 1 have had a great week. They all enjoyed the cinema trip on Wednesday.
1JV have been learning the story of ‘Aargh Spider’ ready to innovate next week. They have also looked at grouping animals in science, locating France on a map of Europe and talked about kindness in RE.
In maths they have explored shapes. They have sorted shapes into 2d and 3d shapes and talked about the properties of the shapes. Finally, they drew lines of symmetry onto shapes.

I hope you enjoyed the half term break. 1JV have returned ready to learn and had a fantastic week. The have been looking at number knowledge in maths and partition numbers into 10’s and 1’s. In English they have written poems about how our senses experience wind and rain. Kindness was the focus of RE and families in PSHE. In art the children have experimented with paint and using different tools to mark make. In science we look at how we know if something is living and sorted objected into living and non-living categories.

1JV have finished the half term with another great week.
They have worked hard in all the lessons and thoroughly deserved their trip to Wat Tyler Park. At the park they explore the old cottage and did a treasure hunt for a teddy bears picnic. The wove twigs and made shelters for bears. They all had a turn t making their own candles. Finally they did a senses walk and collected tiny bits of leaves of different colours.

Year 1 have had another busy week. They have impressed me with their maths knowledge in their assessments. In science they have looked a the sense of smell. In PSHE there was a discussion about families and how families can look different.
In English 1JV have written their innovated ‘Magic Porridge Pot’ stories and made a fantastic job of it.

Week Commencing 2nd October 2023
Year 1 have worked very hard again this week. They have been learning the story of ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ ready to innovate it next week. In maths they have been practising solving mental calculations. Science continued with the senses and this week it was the sense of touch. And a feely bag to describe and guess objects. In RE they have leaned and acted out the story of The Good Samaritan and in PSHE talking about people who care for us.

Year 1 have been amazing again this week.
They have been writing ‘Handa’s Surprise’ story in English. In maths they have practised using number lines for addition and subtraction. In history year 1 have started to look at Victorian schools and compare to our modern one. RE was looking at the Bible stories of Jesus performing miracles.
In science 1JV have continued looking at the 5 senses and this week have explored the sense of taste. Lots of different foods were sampled to investigate sweet, salty and sour tastes.

1JV have had another great week.
They have been practicing adding in maths, looking at the story of Noah’s Ark in RE, thinking about respect in PSHE, and decorating their windmills in DT.
In English they have read Handa’s Surprise story, tasted lots of fruits from the story and then put pictures of the story in the correct order, ready to write it next week.

They have settled well into the routines of year 1. In maths they have been looking at number knowledge and comparing numbers. In science they were looking at the sight sense. In RE 1JV have drawn Christian symbols. In PSHE they acted out our class and school rules, and in history they have made a timeline of British homes from the past.
In English I have been super impressed with how everyone has written the ‘This is the Bear’ story. Well done.

Welcome to 1JV.
I am so proud of how everyone has settled into the new routines of year 1.
This week the children have read ‘This is the bear’ story and practised actions to tell the story. In Maths they have found 1 more and 1 less of a given number and ordered numbers. In science 1JV have labelled parts of the body for our senses topic. PSHE was talking about the class and school rules and in RE the children wrote about where they think God is.
1JV have had an amazing first week. Well done everyone.
