Week commencing 11th July 2022
We have had so much fun this week. We had the best time at the Rock Steady assembly and workshop where we had the chance to try out some of the instruments.
We also had a great creative writing day where we had the chance to plan and write a superhero story and create our story settings using craft materials.
Week commencing 4th July 2022
In DT we made some delicious healthy smoothies.
We peeled and chopped the fruit and used the blenders to make our very own smoothie. We mostly enjoyed the taste test at the end!

Week commencing 27th June 2022
Year 1 had a great day on Friday as part of our Science enrichment day. We spent the morning weeding the area outside the Year 1 classrooms which the children really enjoyed as we were able to look closely at the roots. We then spent the afternoon planting seed bombs and different types of flowers. We can't wait to watch them grow.

We have had another fun filled week.
We have learnt the continents and oceans of the world and the children loved singing the song we learnt and making a jigsaw puzzle map of the world.
We have measured and noted the changes of our sunflowers and had lots of fun at our sports day!
Week Commencing 13th June 2022
On our trip to Hyde hall we were able to become plant hunters where we discovered and learnt about lots of different types of plants including edible plants from different continents. We even visted the Vegetable Garden where we had the opportunity to explore where our food comes from and how to grow it for ourselves. After that gathered lots of plant materials to create a beautiful natural art pattern. We really had a great time in the sunshine!

Science week!
For this years science week Year 1 have been learning all about Respiration. We had an amazing science assembly to kick start the week off where we had a visit from Fizz Pop who showed us lots of different science experiments. We were amazed and couldn’t wait to begin our science week.
We have learnt about how we breathe. We looked at plants, animals, humans and fish/amphibians. We even made our very own lungs! We conducted an experiment to find out what happens when we are exercising and resting, we planted sunflowers and we made breathing apparatus/helmets to allow people to breathe when we swim under the water or visit the moon!
We really have had a great week and enjoyed every moment.

Wow what a fantastic celebration we had in school to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.
It was fantastic to see all the great costumes and outfits. We had so much taking part in the parade and seeing everybody.
The children made some excellent plate designs – we hope you like them as much as we do!

We have had so much fun this week learning about plants and different types of trees. We even went on a tree hunt!
Week Commencing 9th May 2022
Another fabulous week in year 1. Well done to everyone for working so hard. Our most fantastic moment this week was learning about plants in science. We used a real flower to label the features of a plant. The children were able to recall everything they had learned about plants from Barleylands. Then we discussed how they grow and the different root systems.

1Ke School Trip
We had a great time at Barleylands Farm today. We explored the farm and went to visit all the animals. We even got to feed the goats and the sheep!. We then went to look at different types of plants and even had a chance to ride the tractor! It was so much fun. After our picnic lunch we learnt all about farming, how to make bread and then put our skills to the test by making a delicious pizza!

Another fun filled week in 1Ke!
The children written amazing stories in our English lessons by innovating the story of the ‘The Three Little Pigs’. They have been a pleasure to read!
In our Math lessons we have used apparatus to help partition numbers and add double digit numbers together.
In history we made wonderful information brochures all about the Titanic – the children are really enjoying this topic and even had the chance to hot seat some acting passengers!
In Art the children have really impressed me with their wonderful sketching skills using different lines and pencil strokes to create an effect.

This week the children have created some lovely paper weaves in our Art Lesson.
They worked hard to master their skills of coordination and pattern making and after some practise they soon mastered the technique!

Week Commencing 14th March 2022
This week the children have been innovating the story “The Way Back Home”. We have lots of creative ideas. Some of the children’s characters have even visited Buckingham palace and the London Eye.
Well done Year 1 - I am extremely proud of your writing and storytelling skills!
Week Commencing 7th March 2022
We are really enjoying our ‘Animals’ topic. We have been learning about how different animals move and why. We then acted these movements in the hall. The children have really loved acting our their favourite animals and describing how and why different animals move in the way they do.
Week Commencing 28th February 2022
Happy World Book day! We love to celebrate reading and books in year one.
We dressed up as our favourite characters from our favourite books, we made book marks, read to children from other year groups and even had a story read to us from a special visitor.
We had the most wonderful day – thank you for your support.
Week Commencing 21st February 2022
We have been enjoying our new story ‘Mr Magnolia’. Mr Magnolia is a wonderful rhyming story about the marvellous Mr Magnolia who has a trumpet, two lovely sisters, a pond, some owls and a dinosaur. The unusual twist is that he only wears one boot. This has made the children laugh and it has been wonderful to observe their enjoyment. The children have really enjoyed picking out the rhyming couplets within the story.

We have had another fantastic week in year 1.
On Wednesday we had our Geography enrichment day. The children used compasses to work out directions and write them. We even designed our own 3D model of the classroom. I was so impressed at how creative they all were.
We have also enjoyed completing a wellbeing activity each day.

Week Commencing 31st January 2022
Year 1 had lots of fun on our walk around Grays. We followed a map and we saw: the park, thameside theatre, the library and we posted a letter in the post box before heading back to school.
We had a great time on our walk and we are excited to write about it next week in our English lessons.

Week Commencing 24th January 2022
This week, we have written our own stories based on the story ‘Lost in the Toy Museum’ by David Lucas. The story is about how the toys in the museum come to life at night and decide to play hide and seek. It is Bunting, the old toy cat, that goes on an adventure in search of the hiding toys. The children have loved creating their own version using their own favourite toys and have been really imaginative thinking of tricks for the toys to get up to!
We have also really been enjoying our design and technology lessons where we have been learning about levers and sliders.

Week Commencing 10th January 2022
In Year 1 this week we have been using a compass. The children spent some time outside exploring the different directions and found which areas of the playground were pointing North, South, East, and West.
They then used the language they learnt to follow simple directions.

Happy new year to you all!
We have had a lovely first week back from school and it has been wonderful to hear all about the lovely memories the children have made at home with their families.
Our favourite project this week was making pop up cards as part of our D&T project where we are learning about moving picture books. The children loved investigating and exploring different pop up books and then applied their skills and knowledge to design and create their very own pop up card to take home!

We are enjoying all the Christmas festivities in school.
We have written a letter to Santa and he is on his way to collect the Reindeers and save Christmas.
We celebrated with a class party and played party games, ate delicious treats and exchanged presents!

Week Commencing 6th Decemeber 2021
Another great week in 1Ke. The children really enjoyed the visit to the church and sang beautifully. It really started off the Christmas festivities nicely.
We had an amazing time eating a delicious Christmas lunch with all the children in our lovely festive jumpers! Thank you for participating and raising money for a worthy cause.
Finally we had some cheeky reindeers dancing in our classroom and the children have really enjoyed searching for clues and writing a wanted poster to help find them!

We have had a great week writing a brochure all about France!
The children knew lots of interesting facts about the country we are studying.
We have also had lots of fun creating their final art piece of Elmer the Elephant.
I was so impressed with the final results!

We are really enjoying our Geography topic on ‘France’. We have been researching the Famous Landmarks and finding them on a map. We have even labelled the Physical and Human Features. We would all love to visit!

This week we are really proud of our innovation skills!
We have really enjoyed reading the story “Aaaarrrrrgggghhh Spider”. We have been great story tellers and have even included some verbs into our writing.
The children have also begun to innovate the story and have had some really creative and imaginative ideas! I cant wait to see their stories next week!

We have had another fantastic week in year 1.
The children have worked really hard with their writing skills and made some great instructions on ‘how to brush your teeth’ using imperative verbs.
They have also had lots of fun learning all about money and where and how we spend it. They especially enjoyed buying cakes and biscuits using coins to find the total amount.
A big well done to Jeanet who is our ‘Star of the week’ for always trying her best and being a kind friend.

This week we have been extremely busy innovating the story of Goldilocks and the Three bears and the children have had some excellent ideas!
We also had the chance to make our own toys in our Toy Workshop. We had so much fun learning about toys from the past and designing and building our very own toy to take home.

We have had a wonderfully busy week!
The children have very much enjoyed immersing themselves into the story of ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’. They have been great story tellers!
In Maths, we have been working out how to solve worded problems.
In Science, we used our investigating skills and learnt about how we used our sense of touch to describe the shape, texture and temperature of an object.
In Music, the children have been fantastic at finding a steady beat.
During our PSHE lessons, the children have been discussing who cares for them and how.
Finally, we have really enjoyed ‘Hello Yellow’ day today. We have learnt different ways to help ourselves and others when we may be feeling, unhappy, stressed or mad.
Well done IKE for another wonderful week. I am very proud of all your hard work. Keep it up!

We have had an amazing week this week. We have started the story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’. Please ask your children to retell the story to you using the actions they made. We have also adding using a variety of methods, including a numberline. Ask your children if they can tell you the number bonds to 10.
The children have really showcased their imaginative skills and made some excellent playground equipment using boxes, sellotape, card, plastic bottles etc.
We also used our sense of taste to try different foods to categorise into sweet, salty, bitter and sour. We have had a really wonderful week! Well done 1KE for all your hard work!
Week Commencing 13th September 2021
This week year 1 have had lots of fun innovating the story of ‘This is the Bear’. We changed the character to a cat and the children all produced some excellent stories.
In particular, the children have enjoyed Science this week. Our topic is ‘Senses’ and the children have loved learning about the 5 senses. We even went on a scavenger hunt using our sight and our hearing to find different things.
Welcome back and I hope everyone had a wonderful summer.
I am so happy to see everyone back and ready to learn and I am so proud of all the children for settling into their new class so amazingly. They have had their very first week in Year 1 and have been very grown up.
In English, we have been retelling and writing about the story ‘This is the Bear’. The children have been amazing story tellers and are now looking forward to innovating the story next week.
In Maths, we have been recapping one more and one less and writing number sentences.
We have had a very busy week learning about old and new toys and thank you to those children who brought in their favourite toy to share with us.
