3BD

Week commencing 23rd April 2025!

Welcome back 3BD,

It has been lovely to see you all and to hear about your Easter break.

We have kick started the Summer term by increasing our independence and beginning to elevate our writing in readiness for year 4. It has been amazing to hear your ideas about who the Dreamgiver is and to learn about their role, in our short topic about Dreams. In Maths, we have continued to explore subtraction, and it has been good to see so many of you remembering our steps to success from Spring 2.

We will continue to work on word classes and developing the use of more interesting vocabulary next week and look forward to welcoming parents into school on Tuesday, to explore this with us.

Week commencing 7th April 2025!

As our final week comes to an end, we look back at all of the progress made so far this year. We have been amazed at how well year 3 are doing in Reading and how their writing styles are beginning to develop. This week, to inspire our creativity, we created Sense poems to describe what we could see, touch, taste and smell in our playground. We enjoyed the opportunity to go on a sensory walk around the playground, sharing interesting vocabulary that could inspire our writing. Maybe the children could share their performance of their poetry with you at home?

We hope you have a wonderful Easter break and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Week commencing 31st March 2025!

This week we have continued our exploration of rocks and soils. On Wednesday, we created our very own fossils! We are looking forward to sending these home for you to see. Why not try creating your own fossils at home too?

Week commencing 24th March 2025!

This week, Year 3 made an exciting discovery! A dragon egg was found on the small playground, left in a treasure chest in the Tardis. We didn't know why it had been left there and were unsure how long it would be with us, but we decided to write a letter to the Mother Dragon and explore whether she would allow us to keep the egg! Do you think we were persuasive enough?

Week Commencing 17th March 2025!

This week, we have continued our work on Sandy Cove, where we have had to innovate the story of two boys who stumbled across a mystical treasure chest that had been left amongst the rocks. Year 3 changed some of the characters and the setting that they were in and were able to create some fantastic narratives. Well done Year 3.

Week Commencing 10th March 2025!

Another fantastic week in 3BD! This week, we were lucky enough to be able to visit the Chelmsford Museum, where we explored three periods of time linked to our topic: Stone age, Bronze age and Iron age. During our visit, we were able to take part in cave painting, survival skills, diving into historical artefacts and even had the opportunity to look around the rest of the museum. We were so inspired by our visit and it was incredible to be able to have a hands on experience of the past. Well done to Year 3, who shared their knowledge and really improved the staff at the museum.

Week Commencing 3rd March 2025!

What a brilliant week we have had. It was lovely to meet with parents and share the fantastic progress that 3BD have made so far this year. Every child was proud to share their work in books and were able to identify their strengths and areas for improvement in readiness for the Summer term. It was lovely to end our week with World Book day. Your costumes were amazing! Well done to everyone that took part and showcased that the love of reading can take many forms and many genres!

Week commencing 24th February 2025!

This week, we are exploring a new book in English called Stone Age Boy. He ventured into the forest and ended up falling deep into a cave - but this wasn't just any cave - it was a portal to the past! We completed a dairy entry from the perspective of the boy, explaining what had happened and some of the interesting things he experienced. Next week, we will innovate this story, using it as a base to create our own teleportation stories into the Stone Age. Keep a look out for some great examples of our stories next week.

Week commencing 10th February 2025!

This week, we have been fascinated by earthquakes and how they happen. We have explored historical quakes that led to devasting outcomes for thousands of people and explored how people are trying to avoid these kinds of disasters, by creating preventative measures before they happen. In English, we have been writing poems about something that is hiding behind a door. I have been so impressed with the creative ideas that have been shared this week. We look forward to sharing some completed poems on Twitter too!

Week commencing 3rd February 2025!

This week, 3BD have continued to explore the events that took place last week with our UFO landing. They have completed a recount of the events and have enjoyed watching further footage from CCTV gathered from other schools in the trust. On Friday, we transformed into Explorers! What an amazing day we have had! Why not have a look on Twitter to see some of the fantastic activities we took part in. Each child created their own miniature volcano to take home too. Well done 3BD!

Week commencing 27th January 2025!

Have you heard? Aliens have landed at Quarry Hill Academy!

It all started over the weekend, where an unidentified object was caught circling the playground. During the morning of Monday 27th January, children arrived at school to be greeted to a mess on the playground and large, green handprints covering the windows and doors. After receiving an update from Mrs Wakeling, the children were reassured that they were safe, and that NASA were supporting us with our investigations. Throughout our English sessions, Year 3 have observed the evidence, gathered information and asked lots of questions to support them in finding out who, what and why these mysterious visitors have arrived at our school. Keep an eye out for more updates, next week!

Week commencing 20th January 2025!

This week, we have continued our exploration of Rocks and had the opportunity to take part in an online workshop which the children found fascinating! We have enjoyed acting as geologists, sharing our information in the form of a presentation and have even created our own Rock posters to display in class! We ended the week with a wonderful celebration of Culture! It was lovely to see children coming into school in ceremonial dress, showing pride in their culture. We shared languages, traditions and even made some beautiful Romanian weaved baskets. Well done 3BD.

Week commencing 13th January 2025!

This week, we have continued our investigations on rocks. We conducted an experiment to explore how rocks are forms. The children enjoyed learning about Sedimentary (rocks created through movement) , Metamorphic (created through pressure and heat over time) and Igneous rock (formed from cooled magma from a volcanic eruption) and were even able to make the connection to which rock types were explored last week.

Take a look at our edible rocks! Using Starburst, heat and pressure, we were able to create our own miniature, edible rock collection.

Well done 3BD

Week commencing 6th January 2025!

What an amazing start back after the Christmas break!

3BD have had a great week exploring rocks and layers of the Earth in Science and Geography. In English, we have explored the story of a little girl called Scarlett, who finds the confidence to build up her strength to overcome challenges after facing a illness and in DT we have explored pneumatic mechanisms, finding out how to move/open an object using air!

We cannot wait to see what we will explore next week.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week commencing 16th December 2024!

Merry Christmas!

As we come to the end of a very festive week, we look back at some of the wonderful activities we have been taking part in. We have created decorations for the hall, taken part in our annual Church Carol concert, enjoyed watching Christmas performances and even had a surprise visit from the QHA Panto!

We hope you have a lovely break, and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2025!

Week commencing 9th December 2024!

This week we have been writing letters, investigating with magnets, learning about endangered species in Kenya and practicing for our Christmas performance! We have been so impressed with how well 3BD have memorised their words and actions and we cannot wait to share this with you next week.

Well done, 3BD!

Week commencing 2nd December 2024!

Christmas is coming!

This week we have been busy preparing for our upcoming Christmas performances, visit to the church and a visit from a Christmas elf!

3BD have continued to work on their African masks in Art and we hope to be able to share images of these next week.

Continuing our winter theme, we have explored a short clip called Heathrow Bears, where we have explored writing persuasive letters to family members to persuade them to come and visit for Christmas, inspired by the short clip. Writing is improving across year 3 and we look forward to finding out who will be our Golden Writer this half term.

Well done 3BD.

Week commencing 18th November 2024!

This week, we have been exploring friction. Our big question was, 'What material would be the most effective for a skate ramp?'

We predicted our results and then tested a variety of materials. It was great to see 3BD explaining their observations.

In English, we have enjoyed immersing into the story of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. We are preparing to write a newspaper next week to discuss the 5 lucky winners! Keep a look out for some great examples.

Have a lovely weekend.

Week commencing 11th November 2024!

This week, we have remembered those who have lost their lives fighting in the world wars. We joined the rest of the school in a 2-minute silence which allowed us the opportunity to think of how they must have felt and the feelings of their families at their loss. We were amazed to hear from people who are still alive to talk about their experiences.

Within class, we have continued to explore our topic of Kenya. We are beginning to identify the similarities and differences between our two countries. We found it interesting to learn that both Nairobi and London have similar sized populations!

Week commencing 4th November 2024!

What an amazing first week back we have had!

I have seen a real difference in the resilience of 3BD. We have started a new topic on Kenya; exploring similarities and differences between Kenya and the UK. 3BD have fantastic prior knowledge of continents and capital cities. In English, we have explored the story 'Grace and Family', discussing different family structures and where they live. Next week, we will begin innovating this story. I cannot wait to read them!

Well done 3BD.

Week commencing 14th October 2024!

Our last week has been fantastic! We have collated everything that we have learnt about the Tower of London and took part in a Trust History Quiz. We have created poetry inspired by the story 'The Storm Whale' and evaluated the effectiveness of our fruit tarts for DT. Well done on a great first half term, 3BD. Have a lovely break and we will look forwarding to seeing you in November!

Week commencing 7th October 2024!

Another amazing week this week! We have explored the significance of the Tower of London over time in both English and History, looking deeper into the role of Beefeaters (or Yeoman as they are officially named). I have been amazed at the knowledge 3BD have retained on this subject and really enjoyed reading their non-chronological reports. We have ended the week by creating our own fruit tarts in DT. We planned our design, constructed our tart and cooked them in the oven.

I cannot wait to see what will happen next week!

Week Commencing 30th September 2024

Wow! We have had an amazing week, this week in 3BD. Finishing our week with a trip to the Tower of London, we feel that we have fully immersed into the past. Miss Dobson and I want to say a huge, well done, to all of 3BD. Staff at the Tower of London were amazed with their knowledge and so were we! It was great to see the children using their experience when returning to school, by embedding this knowledge into their English report writing. They were able to match their research with what they had seen in person. I think that next week we will have some fantastic pieces of writing ready to share on the blog on Friday. Keep your eyes peeled!

Week Commencing 23rd September 2024

This week, we have continued our research into the Tower of London. With the help of a time machine created by one of the children in 3BD, we held on tight as we were transported back to the 1500's, under the reign of King Henry VIII.

We researched the events of Anne Boleyn's downfall and even wrote a dairy entry of her last few days in the tower.

In Maths, we have continued to develop our knowledge of formal methods, but this time using subtraction. I have been so impressed with their speed and accuracy in using column method. Keep up the great work 3BD.

Week Commencing 16th September 2024

Where did it all begin? This is the question we have been exploring this week in History.

3BD have researched the origins of the Tower of London, revealing that it was originally build by King William I (A Norman King). We have labelled images of the Tower over time and explored the significance of the White Tower.

In Science, we have explored the importance of understanding what is in our food and its benefits on our bodies. 3BD have understood that a varied, balanced diet is important for development but also understand that treats are fine too! We have looked at restaurant menus and identified whether their meals are balanced, and looked at the food we eat at home as well. I have been very impressed by how much the children know and how responsible they are in ensuring they are trying to keep a balanced lifestyle.

Week Commencing 9th September 2024

Another brilliant week in 3BD. This week we have been exploring healthy food choices and recipes. In DT we learnt about how foods are transported and which foods are seasonal. This supported us in creating our own recipe for 'Fruit Kebabs'. Some of us tried their kebabs with syrup, as a inspiration from Japanese Fruit Kebabs using plum sauce. Delicious!

Week commencing 2nd September 2024!

Welcome back 3BD!

What a week we have had!

It has been lovely to see you all in your new uniforms, ready to start another exciting year.

This week, we have immersed ourselves into the land of fairytales! We have retold the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and we are preparing to innovate our own fairytale stories, next week.

In Maths, we have been exploring place value and I have been so impressed by the knowledge of number, in year 3.

Everyone has settled in so well this week. I hope that this continues.

We look forward to welcoming parents to our 'Meet and Greet' event next week.

Have a lovely weekend
