Week Commencing 5th July 2021

We have had a lovely day hosting our own Fun Fair. The children have been very busy making their own hats and decorating doughnuts. Afterwards we had a parade to showcase out hats and clothes. In the afternoon we participated in different games such as coconut shy, tin can alley and hook a duck. The children paid to take part in each activity and earned their own token. At the end of the day they traded their token in for a special prize. We had henna tattoos, our own photo booth and danced to some music. We very have had a very fulfilled day which was enjoyed by all!

Week Commencing 14th June 2021

In Maths, we have been working on our number sense. We have been partitioning teen numbers into tens and ones.


We have also been visiting Year 1 to start our transition. The children have loved seeing the Year 1 classrooms and we have been practising our handwriting skills.  They have settled really well into the classroom and are really excited to make the transition into Year 1 next year.

Week Commencing 7th June 2021

This week, we have introduced our new topic ‘Splash’! The children have loved learning all about the beach and the seaside and how to keep safe in the sun and when visiting the seaside.


We have also been reading the story ‘Rainbow Fish’. The children have really enjoyed it and have made some lovely collage of fish and have retold the story beautifully.


In numeracy, we have been focusing on doubling and halving and how to use different resources to help us.

Week Commencing 17th May 2021

We are very excited to announce that we now have some butterflies. We are waiting for their wings to dry so that we can release them soon.


The children have also loved reading the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ we have created a story map, retold the story and we have even written the story as a class using time conjunctions.


The children have also collaged some of the characters from the story.


In Maths, we have been looking at worded problems and working out whether we need to add or subtract to find the answer. The children have also been working on their reasoning skills.

Week Commencing 10th May 2021

We are very excited to announce that our class caterpillars have now spun a cocoon. We are all very excited to see the next stage.

We are all really enjoying the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and have had lots of fun innovating the story by changing the character and the different things the new character will eat. The children have really enjoyed making the story their own and are beginning to write sentences independently.


In maths, we have been focusing on 2D and 3D shapes. We have been working on recognizing and naming them, describing them using the correct mathematical language and developing our reasoning by trialling which types of shapes are better for building towers and why and which shapes are better to make a picture. The children have really developed their understanding and reasoning.


The children have also been making their own caterpillars by using paper chains and they look excellent.


Another wonderful week in Reception and the children have been working really hard. We are very proud of you all!

Week Commencing 3rd May 2021

For our science week, the children have enjoyed being investigators. They were shocked to find that someone had stolen our trophy from school on Tuesday morning. They have been busy looking at fingerprints, investigating the clues, interviewing different adults and matching up the handwriting from the note that was left. They were pleased when it was returned to school on Thursday. Well done investigators! 

Week Commencing 19th April 2021

This week in Reception we have continued to read the story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We have used adjectives to describe the different characters.

In maths we have been exploring measure – we have looked at measuring height, weight and capacity. The children have loved measuring how tall they are.

The children have also planted their sunflower seeds and are excited to see how they have grown!

Today we have celebrated England’s special day - St George’s day. We have learnt all about this special day and the children have painted flags and wore red roses. 

Week Commencing 12th April 2021

This week we introduced the children to our new ‘Growing’ topic. We explored things that grow and how they grow. The children have begun to bring in their baby photos and we have been looking at how we have grown ourselves.

The children have also discussed what they want to be when they grow up.

In Literacy, we have been reading ‘The Enormous Turnip’ and we have been story tellers using Pie Corbett actions. The children have sequenced the story and wrote a caption and/or sentence about the story.

In Maths we have been working on number recognition and matching numerals to quantities.

Week Commencing 15th March 2021

This week in Reception we have been reading a new story in Literacy called ‘Dinosaurs In The Supermarket’. The children have really enjoyed this book and we have even had dinosaurs visit our class and leave footprints!


The children’s knowledge of dinosaur has really grown since we have been reading fiction and non-fiction books and they can confidently discuss their favourite dinosaurs and their favourite facts!


In Maths, we have been focusing on subtraction.  The children have explored different resources to show their working out and have practised reading and writing the number sentence. Some children even took on the worded problem!


The children have also had lots of fun outdoors using the tweezers to collect the dinosaurs through the web and counting how many each rescued.  We even saw some amazing dinosaur houses being built!


We celebrated St Patricks Day by making leprechaun masks, rainbow friendship bracelets, painting the Irish flag and designing a shamrock! The children loved learning about Ireland and their special national day.


Finally on Friday we celebrated Red Nose Day where the children designed their own red nose and learnt about the amazing charity and how it helps others.

Week Commencing 1st March 2021

This week in Reception we wrote book reviews for the story ‘The Dinosaur That Pooped The Past’. The children were fantastic at reviewing the story and told us lots of things they enjoyed from the book. We are very proud of their writing.


We have also really enjoyed World Book Day and loved seeing all the children’s wonderful costumes.

In Maths we have been doubling and have been very creative in working out and recording our answers.


The children have also been very creative in making dinosaur pictures and doing lots of fun things at home – even baking dinosaur cupcakes!

Week Commencing 8th February 2021

This week we have been making invitations for a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and  lots of the children have made fantastic decorations and sandwiches ready for their picnics. They really enjoyed having a picnic at home with their teddies. Thank you for sharing with us.

Also, the children were so excited about the snow. They shared with us all the fun they had in the snow and made some lovely snowmen! Well done!

Week Commencing 1st February 2021

We made binoculars and went on a bear hunt. The children were very imaginative and found lots of animals from the jungle too! We also used our binoculars to go on a sound hunt around our homes.


We have enjoyed completing lots of activities which make us feel good for ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’ and the children have been very creative expressing themselves. 


In maths, we have had a fun measure week where we have explored measuring length, height, weight, capacity and volume. The children have had lots of fun exploring measure. They have made cakes and cookies, measured who has the biggest feet and hands and worked out the capacity of different containers in their homes.

We have celebrated ‘Burns Night’ we discussed the festivity and the children even made some Scottish flags at home.

Week Commencing 14th December 2020

This week the children have participated in lots of festive activities. They have made Christmas cards, shape calendars, a Christmas tree decoration and a wreath.  We have had lots of fun at out Christmas party and eating our Christmas dinner with our teachers. The Reception team would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 

Week Commencing 30th November 2020

The children have had lots of fun working in Santa's workshop this week. They have been very busy wrapping lots of presents and writing tags. The children have enjoyed dressing up and using the present sacks. 

Week Commencing 23rd November 2020

This week we have been learning to subtract using objects. The children have loved using the frogs to see how many are left on the bank after some leapt into the pond!

Week Commencing 16th November 2020

This week the children have enjoyed exploring the story of 'The Little Red Hen'. They have particularly enjoyed our reading challenge. The children read the words and selected the correct word by putting a peg on it. Some children have even managed to write the words in a sentence. The children's reading skills are really developing - well done!

Week Commencing 9th November 2020

Reception have been so busy the last few weeks, exploring a range of exciting ‘Big Questions’ linked to our topics, ‘All about me’ and ‘People who help us’. We have explored eye colour, healthy eating, different job roles of people in our community, customs and traditions of our families or people we may know and retold the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’. The children have really enjoyed learning our story and took part in making their own bread roll to bring home. They followed instructions from the Little Red Hen and all remembered that helping makes every job easier. This week, we have explored Remembrance day, Children in need and Diwali. All of these experiences have enabled the children to talk about the lives of others and how we all have different customs and traditions that we follow within our homes. The children loved creating Mendi pictures for our celebration wall and enjoyed watching clips of fireworks that are used during this festival. We have had a wonderful week and we cannot wait to see what the children achieve next week. Have a lovely weekend Miss Milbourn and Miss Keenan

Week beginning 14th September 2020

The children have settled well into Reception and have been enjoyed playing with lots of different activities and exploring all the different areas. They particularly enjoy playing in our new role play area. We have really enjoyed learning about why we are amazing this week and we have been discussing who we live with, how we help out at home and what we like doing.
